Cambodian Human Rights Committee Remarks on Recent Case of Detained Soldiers and Thai Response

Phnom Penh, August 3, 2025 — The Cambodian Human Rights Committee has issued a public statement regarding the ongoing situation of two Cambodian soldiers detained by the Thai military. The case arose following allegations of illegal detention, torture, and deportation involving 20 Cambodian soldiers, a matter that prompted international attention.

In response to the Cambodian Human Rights Committee’s request for intervention, the case was escalated to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva, as well as to the rotating chair of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) in Malaysia, on August 2, 2025.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand provided a formal response to Cambodia’s concerns. The Cambodian Human Rights Committee quoted the last paragraph of Thailand’s statement, which states: “Thailand is ready to work with the international community to verify the facts. In this regard, Thailand has invited representatives from the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to visit the detained Cambodian soldiers.”

The Cambodian Human Rights Committee has assured the public that Thailand’s willingness to cooperate with international organizations indicates a commitment to transparency. The Committee urged the Cambodian people not to worry, emphasizing that the Thai government is open to inspection and verification of the detainees’ situation.

The Committee also encouraged fellow citoyens to maintain their health and well-being during this period of international inquiry, reaffirming their confidence in the diplomatic process.
